CHAPTER

K.D. wished Buck would stop pacing the room. The little man in the greasy mechanic’s shirt seemed determined to cut a hole in the floor with his boots. “Can I get you something to drink, Buck? You look like you’re about to explode.”

“I AM! I mean, after all this, after everything we’ve been through, I finally get her to agree to the lawsuit. She attends one Bible study and BAM, suddenly it’s not in the Lord’s will for us to sue the doctor.” He stopped, sat in the chair and dropped his head into his hands.

How in the world God figured into a lawsuit remained out of K.D.’s grasp, but she didn’t want to scoff at the Murdock’s belief system. After all, she believed in God too. Why wouldn’t He want them to litigate? An eye for an eye and all that jazz.

Buck lifted his head and raked a hand through his hair. Ingram looked like he could use a stiff drink. K.D. fetched them both water instead.

“One minute she’s all gung ho and the next minute we’re going against God’s holy plan and risking our salvation. All this from one hour at the fellowship hall this morning. Women with too much time on their hands is what I say. Nothing worse than a bunch of women gossiping and calling it Christianity.”

K.D. bristled at the chauvinistic words and pushed off from the desk she leaned against, but Ingram held up a hand as he took a sip of water. “Okay, let’s settle down. Why don’t we all simmer down, give y’all some time to work this out. Matter of fact, give it a few days without even bringing it up. She may come to her senses all by herself. If I’ve learned anything in my failed marriage it’s when a woman’s irritated, you better give her some space. Don’t argue with her right away because you’ll never win. You haven’t heard anything else from Bart Cookson, have you?”

“Calls every day. I told him if he talked to Shelly Anne again, I’d get you to file a restraining order. Tries to sweet talk her, goes on and on about Bo and how he would follow his football games in the paper, knew what a talent he was. What a crock, but she clings to it, lets his fancy words make her feel better. Women.”

K.D. felt outnumbered by the Neanderthals in front of her. “Why don’t you let me talk to her? Shelly Anne seems pretty centered to me. Is she at home or at work?”

“She’s at work now.”

“I don’t think she’d go off on some religious tantrum if she didn’t feel she had a valid point. Plus it might help to have a woman’s ears involved. You guys aren’t coming across as the most sympathetic listeners.” K.D. rolled her eyes.

Both men seemed relieved not to have to address the issue further, and K.
